DOOR HANDLES

(1996)

Contemporary design has produced many elegant handles. They are functional, and aesthetically minimal. In their pursuit of the pragmatic, they have overlooked the fact that the door handle is one of the few house building products the user really touches. The present design, to be cast in bronze, follows the contour of the palm of the hand, and has the side in contact with the hand very highly polished, as if it were a terse skin. The underside, where the thumb makes contact, is of a rougher texture. The contrast between the smooth and the rough reinforces the sensorial quality of the handles very sculptural shape. Opening the door is thusly elevated to a sensual experience.
